Page 1 of 2 I can actually pick out movies from each decade that mark out the whole period for me, by even mentioning the names i get kicked back into that year and great feelings arise. Since i've only been living from the end of the 70's, i usually get thrown into the 80's. There are several reasons why i love 80's movies, the most importan is however the sheer effort the filmakers went through to create something intriguing for the eye. I'm talking about real landskapes, real nature, they didn't just put actors infront of a bluescreen, everything was real right down to the last stone on the hill.
Another 80's movie phenomena was that many actors appeared in great movies, but still managed to never reappear in any film that was slightly worth watching. There are even actors who were huge in the 80's and had the business at their feet, even some of these must have made some wrong moves to totally dissappear or get downsized to tv or direct to video flicks. A good example in this catagory is Corey & Corey, Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. Both these actors had a good run in the mid 80's and both of them have still to appear in a A-list within the last 15 years. There are some however who don't actually dissappear, nore do they end up making totally braindead bad movies. I think this might have some connection with their agent. When i first saw Christopher Lambert in "Highlander", i was dead sure that he would end up as the next-best-thing, his acting was intense and he had that action hero look in his eyes. Sadly he would just prove my point, he hasn't been lucky with his role since 1986 either. Given that he's made some ok thrillers, but they tend to turn up directly on the videoshelf more and more often.
But what i blame him for the most is the fact that he managed to almost totally ruin the "Highlander" legacy by exploiting it in the endless bad sequals. Still i can't get angry at him since he made my life richer after creating a piece of art in 1986. The movie was "Highlander" and yes it's still a piece of art.
I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal This line is delivered in the movie by Christopher Lambert's character, the clue is that he says it in 1986, caught your interest?
The story of "Highlander" is very thought through and therefore oh so interesting. We start in the 15th century where we find Connor Macleod (Lambert) who lives in a small village at the highlands of Scottland. His clan is involved in a brutal fight where a mystical swordsman kalled The Kurgan delivers a killing stab to Connor.
The lethal stab doesn't kill him, the wound heals as if he was never slashed by the sword. This mysterious happening causes the village to belive that Connor has connections with the devil, he is subsequently banished by his clan and sent away.
